Vision for construction of the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory at the Homestate Site

April 27, 2010

The Library will be hosting this video-conference on Wednesday, April 28th starting at 9:30 a.m. in room 105.

The National Science Foundation has recently funded the development of preliminary designs for a new Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) at the former Homestake gold mine in Lead, SD (see http://www.lbl.gov/nsd/homestake/) with a planned construction start in late 2012. Through efforts by the State of South Dakota and philanthropic support, the Homestake site has been reopened as the Sanford Laboratory (http://www.sanfordundergroundlaboratoryathomestake.org/) to support early science activities and to prepare Homestake for the construction of a DUSEL.

In this session, through video we will present the vision for the construction of a DUSEL at the Homestake site. We will report progress made to date through the early science activities of the Sanford Laboratory including high-performance networking in extreme environments underground to provide real-time access to underground science to the world. A live videoconference to the 4,850-foot level of the Sanford Laboratory is planned to provide a rare opportunity to view Homestake as it is evolving into a new national deep underground science facility. The presentation will also discuss how the project leaders hope to coordinate /collaborate with the Internet2 community to ensure research sites are ready for the DUSEL data in the coming years.

Spring Clean-up

April 6, 2010

Sandy Linn Cleans Up the Library's Grounds (Photo by Patty Vick)

Briggs employees recently held their third annual spring clean-up of the grounds around the library.  Sandy Linn, Jon Stacey, Kim Winterfeld, Ruby Wilson, Lisa Elsinger, and Patty Vick joined forces and picked up all of the trash around the library building.  Spring rains are encouraging the grass to grow and thanks to these “can-do” employees we’ll have a green view unmarred by winter garbage.
