S.D. Library Snapshot Day – November 3, 2010

October 25, 2010

We are celebrating Library Snapshot Day at Briggs on Wednesday, November 3rd. The week of October 31st to November 6th has been set aside for libraries in SD to gather information about what they do all day. The information gathered will be used to demonstrate the importance of libraries in South Dakota communities, school districts, and higher education.

We will be collecting all kinds of statistics that day, such things as how many books are checked out, how many reference questions are answered, how many items have been processed, how many people walk through our doors. But the library’s impact is more than just numbers; we want to know what you, our patrons think!

Come in on Wednesday, November 3rd and tell us what you think. You are important to us!

Library Snapshot Day is an initiative promoted by the American Library Association and the South Dakota State Library for ALL types of libraries. Using Library Snapshot Day, we want to demonstrate the impact that each library has, on a local and statewide level.

State and Federal Election Resources available

October 18, 2010

In case you hadn’t heard, there is an important election coming up on November 2.  There are a variety of resources available online for election and voter registration information.  For South Dakota, the go-to place for information is the Secretary of State’s Web site at http://www.sdsos.gov/index.shtm.  On this page, you can click on the Elections & Voter Registration box for a large amount of information related to current and past elections.  Would you like to become a poll worker?  Find out how by visiting the election process page.  Voters can also verify registration, look at sample ballots, find the location of their polling place and track absentee ballots.

Nationally, the USA.gov Web site at http://www.usa.gov/Citizen/Topics/Voting/Register.shtml has information relating to each state, as well as voter assistance for those in uniform or residing overseas, and a voting rights and discrimination page.

The United States Election Assistance Commission at http://www.eac.gov/ not only has resources for voters, but also information on how ballots are created, what makes a good ballot, voting system testing, and election management resources, among other topics.

In South Dakota Poll Hours for all elections are 7:00 am to 7:00 pm local time.

Microfilm Disaster Abatement (Nearly) Completed!

October 13, 2010

During the lower level renovations this summer, a plugged drain in the ceiling sent water into a storage room, wetting hundreds of microfilm reels.  We’re happy to report that the microfilm, with the exception of a few requiring conservation, have now been re-boxed, re-labeled, and re-shelved!

Congratulations and thank you to those involved in getting these 1,710 microfilm reels salvaged, back in the cabinets, and ready for use!

Wet microfilm set out for drying and checking
