Has SDSU’s campus changed in the last eight years? Oh, yeah. Just ask Chuck Cecil, former SDSU employee and Distinguished Alumnus, who recently completed updating a model of campus. The model was “offline” for a few weeks while Mr. Cecil worked on “upgrades” but is now back in its display case in the library’s lobby.

Mr. Cecil built the original model in the 1970’s and the last changes were made in 2000 by Robert Pengra. To reflect the SDSU campus in 2008, Mr. Cecil removed the Dean of Agriculture’s house and modified the Physical Plant. New additions built and placed by Mr. Cecil include: Wellness Center, Avera Health Complex, Equestrian Center, Harding Hall South, Dykhouse Student Athlete Center, Innovation Campus., Baseball and Softball Fields, Seed Technology Building, and Medal of Honor Park.

Thinking ahead, Mr. Cecil also included a new residence hall scheduled for completion in 2010. He worked from plans for the building, which will be located west of Grove Hall. Jokingly, Mr. Cecil noted that SDSU should only add buildings within current campus boundaries because the model is reaching the limits of its display case.

Thank you to Mr. Cecil for this contribution to SDSU. The library staff invites everyone to come in out of the cold and enjoy the model and check out a book to read for fun during the semester break. The Recent Fiction Area on the main level is an excellent place to browse for a good book and to relax and read. Use the Hours link on the library’s homepage to find out when we are open over the holiday break.
